Poetry, Prose, Creative Nonfiction Submissions
We don't have a lot of hard and fast rules around here, just slippery guidelines.
Here are the most important ones you need to know about: We publish ONE issue a year that is usually released at year end. We accept submissions year-round, and often respond to them within weeks of receiving them. However, we make the majority of our decisions approximately 3 months before our publication dates. You will receive notification of acceptance/rejection via an email form letter. Because of the volume of submissions we receive, we cannot provide personal responses or critiques.
We accept submissions from both new and established authors. Send us only the best of your best, the most thoughtful, complex, challenging, moving poetry you can muster. We'll use our intuition and a keen sense of smell to guide us in the right direction, and we'll know what we want when we find it. Our featured authors have usually published one or more books of creative prose, poetry, creative interviews or what lies between, or an impressive number of creative works in impressive literary publications. Our featured authors don't come from any specific place or time. Their work is not required by us to fit a specific genre or subject matter beyond the aforementioned.
Formatting Guidelines: We prefert electronic submissions via the email address below. Use the body of your email as a cover letter. The author's name and email address should appear both in the email message and on the first page of the manuscript. Please Send your work in .doc, .rtf, or .txt format. No .wps, .zip, or .sit files. Multiple submissions should be sent as as unique documents, attached to a single email. You will receive an email with confirmation that we received your manuscript and explanation of the time frame for review and publication of the next issue since it may change from year to year.
If your work is chosen to appear in DISPATCH Detroit, we will request a the submission on paper by snail mail along with your phone number and mailing address so that we can contact you regarding questions and to send you a proof copy prior to publishing.
Fiction and nonfiction submissions should be double-spaced. Poetry may be single-spaced. If the manuscript is accepted elsewhere, we want to know so that we can acknowledge the publication.
Also, we can't pay you any money. By submitting to Doorjamb Press, you attest that your submission is your own, original work. All rights revert to the author. If you reprint the piece elsewhere, we require that you cite our publication as the original or previous publisher.
